Want to know the right way to ask for a raise? Ever asked for a raise before? Maybe you asked for one but ruined your future with that company when they said no?
How to get a raise
Listen to Bridget McManus for some basic tips and advice to consider before popping the question on your boss.
Basic Tips before asking
Make sure you have worked there a while before asking. It is pointless to ask for a raise as a brand new employee. You need to allow plenty of time for management to get to know what kind of worker you really are.
You need to know why you deserve a raise. You can't just walk into your bosses office with a bunch of lousy reasons like how neat your work space is or that you want to buy something for home.
Don't ask for more than what your boss will think is realistic. If you took the job initially for $40,000 per year and you are now asking for $60,000, it will probably seem ridiculous. Keep it reasonable.
The last obvious point made in this video is to make sure you are prepared. This is a big deal and you are going to have to sell yourself.
Here are some more things to think about brought to you by the lovely Patricia Stark.
Here is a short recap of what Patricia talked about:
Your likelihood of getting a raise greatly increases if you can prove why you deserve one.
Build your reputation at work.
Be a team player who makes other people better.
Document your successes and big contributions to your company.
Make a proposal just like a lawyer would build a case.
Come up with a number before asking.
Keep it professional and don't bring personal issues into the discussions.
